Pharos Notify 6.0 for Mac OS X

Quick Start

  1. Install build 1950 or later of the Pharos LPD Server and run the registry file included with the Pharos Notify installer. (The registry file is not needed if Pharos Popup 6.0 or later is installed on the client machine.)
  2. Log in as an administrator and run the Notify installer to install the Notify client on your Mac OS X client machines.
  3. At the end of the installation process, enter the network details for the Pharos Database Server.
  4. If needed, add any printer queues required for printing.
  5. Notify will now be running and will also start up automatically every time a user logs in to the machine.

Description

Pharos Notify is an application that can present information to users and optionally collect responses. Notify is a background application, so it will only be visible to users when information needs to be displayed or gathered.

Requirements

Pharos Notify for Mac OS X has the following requirements:

  1. Mac OS X 10.2 or later. (A version of Notify that is compatible with Mac OS X 10.1 can be requested from Pharos Systems.)
  2. Build 1950 or later of the Pharos LPD Server.
  3. The registry file shipped together with Notify must be applied to the LPD Server.
Note: The registry file is not needed if Pharos Popup 6.0 or later is installed on the client machine.

Installing Notify

To install Notify 6.0, obtain the Notify installer and run it:

  1. Log in to the client machine, using an administrator account.
  2. Obtain the file Notify.dmg from Pharos Systems.
  3. Double-click this file to create a new disk image in Finder. This disk contains the Notify 6.0 installer, Notify.mpkg.
  4. Double-click the installer to run it. You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator.
  5. Select a destination disk. You will only be able to select the startup disk.
  6. Click <Install> (or <Upgrade>). The installer automatically installs the Notify application.
  7. At the end of the installation process, the installer launches the Notify Setup Assistant.

Configuring Notify

To configure Notify for Mac OS X, follow the steps in the Notify Setup Assistant:

  1. Enter the domain name or IP address of the Pharos Database Server. Enter custom values for the Pharos Database Server Port and Timeout, if required. These fields will already be set to the recommended values. Click <Continue>.
  2. Notify will be enabled by default. If you would like to disable Notify, click the <Disable> button. This will disable Notify on the client machine until it is enabled by running the Notify Setup Assistant again and clicking the <Enable> button. Click <Continue>.
  3. A summary of the entered values will be displayed. Click <Done> to complete the setup process.
  4. To reconfigure Notify at a later time, run the Notify Setup Assistant again. It is located in /Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities.

Pharos Notify will now be running on the client machine and will be automatically launched every time a user logs in.

Configuring Printers

If Notify is used together with Pharos Popup for Mac OS X, follow the instructions in the Popup documentation to set up printer queues for Popup printing. If Notify is used separately and no printer queues have been set up on the client machine, add printer queues in the Print Center (on Mac OS X 10.2) or Printer Setup Utility (on Mac OS X 10.3 and later) applications:

  1. On Mac OS X 10.2, open <Print Center> in </Applications/Utilities/>. On Mac OS X 10.3 and later, open <Print Setup Utility> in the same location.
  2. Click the <Add> button in the toolbar.
  3. From the topmost popup button, select <IP Printing>.
  4. On Mac OS X 10.3 and later, select <LPD/LPR> from the printer type popup button.
  5. In the printer address field, enter the host name or IP address of the Pharos Print Server.
Important: Do NOT use the address of the target printer. The address should always be that of a Pharos Print Server.
  6. On Mac OS X 10.2, uncheck the default queue checkbox.
  7. In the queue name field, enter the name of the queue on the Pharos Print Server that should be used for printing.
  8. From the printer model popup button, select the type of printer associated with the printer queue. If the desired printer is not available, selecting "Generic" will work in most cases.
  9. Click <Add>. The new printer queue will now show up in the list of printers.
  10. To print to the new queue, select it from the printer popup button in the print dialog of any application.

Removing Notify

To remove Notify from a client machine, run the Pharos Uninstaller:

  1. Launch the Uninstaller application in /Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities.
  2. Select Pharos Notify and any other Pharos components that you would like to uninstall, then click <Continue>.
  3. A list of the selected items will be shown. Click <Continue>.
  4. Type in an administrator user name and password when required to do so. The selected components will be removed from the client machine.
  5. Click <Done> and log out of the client machine.

Notes

If there are printers on the network that support Apple's Rendezvous technology, users may be able to bypass the Pharos printing system. To avoid this problem, disable the Rendezvous features of any such printers.

If the software firewall (ipfw) on the client machine is active, the following ports must be opened for traffic for Notify to work properly:

  1. Port 2355.
  2. Port 28201.

The firewall in Mac OS X is disabled by default. If it has not been manually enabled, these ports will already be open.

If a custom port was specified in the Notify Setup Assistant, make sure that this port is open instead of port 2355. If a custom Notify port has been specified in the Pharos Administrator, make sure that this port is open instead of port 28201.
