Hot off the Presses Phil Tiemeyer Publishes Thought-Provoking History of Male Flight Attendants In his vibrant new book, Plane Queer: Labor, Sexuality, and AIDS in the History of Male Flight Attendants, Phil Tiemeyer, assistant professor of history, details the history— including their struggles for civil rights—of men working as flight attendants. Beginning with the founding of the profession in the late 1920s and continuing into the post-September 11 era, Plane Queer examines the history of men who joined workplaces customarily identified as female-oriented. It details the hardships these men faced at work, paying particular attention to the conflation of gender-based, sexuality-based and AIDS-based discrimination. Rob Fleming Publishes Book on Sustainable Design Education Professor Rob Fleming’s new book, Design Education for a Sustainable Future, explores a new model for design education with sustainability at the core. The book offers a blueprint for overhauling the education and training of design professionals, challenging educators to rise to the challenge of moving from wellintentioned but lightweight “greening” to the deeper and more impactful ideals of sustainability and resilience. 46 • Profession, Career, Edge
