Javacool's SpywareBlaster is an excellent preventative Anti-spyware tool. Aside from updating, this software passively protects your computer against thousands of the most common types of spyware on the internet.

When prompted to "run or save this file," choose run to begin installation.
After the download is complete, you will again be prompted whether or not you would like to run this program.
Choose "Run" again and installation and setup will begin.
The first Setup Wizard menu is just a welcome menu. Hit the next button to proceed with installation.
The following menu is the EULA or End User License Agreement. You should always thoroughly read such agreements so you fully understand the legal implications and applications of the software to be installed. Once you have done this, select the "I accept the terms in the license agreement option, and hit the next button to continue.
An information menu will be presented after the EULA. Again, carefully read it's contents and then click "Next" to continue.
The following screen allows you to choose the installation location for the software.
Leave the default location selected, and hit "Next" to continue.
The following screen asks whether or not you would like to place a shortcut for SpywareBlaster on your Desktop. This step is is optional. If you choose not to, remember, SpywareBlaster will still appear in the Start Menu Programs. Once you have decided, hit the "Next" button to continue.
The next menu is the final installation setup screen. Hit "Install" to commence installation.
